VACQUEYRAS DOMAINE DE LONGUE TOQUE 2008

“Propriété depuis une dizaine d’années de la Maison Gabriel Meffre, ce domaine tire son nom de longs bosquets (”touque” en provençal) qui délimitaient autrefois les parcelles. Deux tiers Grenache, un tiers Syrah, ce 2008 se distingue d’emblée par sa couleur pourpre très foncée, animée de forts beaux reflets noirs. Un appel à la dégustation que le nez amplifie avec ses parfums puissants de fruits cuits et de fruits macérés dans l’alcool, puis ses notes explosives d’épices et de fraise révélées à l’agitation. Très gras, plein, soutenu par des tanins élégants, le palais fait longuement écho au bouquet avant de s’épanouir sur une touche réglissée du plus bel effet. Puissant et racé, ce vin n’a pas encore révélé tout son potentiel. A revoir dans trois ou quatre ans.”

With summer almost officially here, thoughts turn to al fresco dining and easy drinking. Fresh whites and crisp rosés from the South of France are the perfect choice and there are two from La Châsse that have made the grade for top UK judges in the 2010 Top 100 PGI (Protected Geographical Indication, formerly Vin de Pays) France.

First, there is the 2009 La Châsse Chardonnay Viognier, Vin de Pays d’Oc (priced at £6.49 and available from the Co-op, Waitrose and Asda) made from a blend of 50% chardonnay and 50% viognier. The fruit is sourced from selected vineyards in the Languedoc region. The wine undergoes a process of cool fermentation in stainless steel and six months in tank before bottling.

Then, there is the 2009 La Châsse Shiraz Grenache Rosé, Vin de Pays d’Oc (priced at £6.49 and available at Booths and Asda) made from a blend of 50% shiraz and 50% Grenache. Again the fruit is sourced from selected vineyards in the Languedoc but in this process no malolactic fermentation occurs.

So for a positively superb summer no matter what the occasion, buy a bottle of La Châsse.
